Popular questions

In-depth answers to common questions about camping, driving, and road trips in New Zealand.

Booking & Payments

Questions about pricing, deposits, and how payment works for Suzuki Jimny hire in Christchurch and Queenstown car rentals. Keywords: Suzuki Jimny hire NZ, Christchurch car rental, Queenstown Jimny rental, rental bond NZ, car hire excess New Zealand.

How do I book a Suzuki Jimny in Christchurch?

Use our online booking system: choose your dates, pickup location (Christchurch or Queenstown), and any extras, then confirm the booking online. For special requests (different pickup time, extra gear, or a tight itinerary), contact us and we’ll help match the right Jimny to your trip.

Can I hire a Jimny from Queenstown?

Yes. We offer Queenstown Jimny rental from a location near the airport. Queenstown vehicles are set up for day trips and winter driving (snow chains in winter); they typically do not have rooftop tents. Choose Queenstown as your pickup location when booking.

Is there a minimum rental period?

Yes. Minimum hire periods apply and can vary by season and location. Many South Island itineraries work best with multiple days (especially for Tekapo, Mt Cook, Wānaka, or Queenstown). Check the booking system for your dates or contact us for advice.

What payment methods do you accept?

Online payments are typically made by card through our secure booking checkout. If you need an alternative method, contact us before booking and we’ll confirm what’s available for your dates and location.

Do I need to pay in full before pickup?

Most bookings require payment to be completed before pickup. If your booking is only partially paid, you’ll need to pay the remaining balance by the due date shown in your booking confirmation (and before you collect the vehicle). Paying earlier close to travel dates helps avoid last-minute delays at pickup.

What is the bond amount?

The bond (security deposit) is a temporary amount held to cover potential damage, violations, or unpaid charges. The amount can vary based on vehicle setup and insurance/excess selection. Your booking confirmation will show the bond for your hire.

When is the bond released?

We process the bond release after the vehicle is returned and post-hire checks are completed. Banks and card providers can take additional time to show the release on your statement. If you need proof for onward travel, contact us and we can confirm when the release was actioned.

Can I reduce the excess?

Yes. Excess reduction options are typically available at checkout or by request. Reducing the excess is popular for South Island road trips where you might be driving longer distances, on gravel roads, or in winter conditions.

What happens if I return the car late?

Late returns may incur charges as set out in your rental agreement. If you know you’ll be late, contact us as soon as possible so we can try to arrange an extension and avoid inconvenience to the next customer.

Can someone else pay for my booking?

Yes. It’s common for a friend, family member, or business to pay. The primary driver still needs to meet the driver requirements and present the required licence at pickup. If the payer won’t be present, let us know so we can confirm the details.

Driver Requirements

What you need to legally drive our rental vehicles in New Zealand.

What is the minimum age to rent a Suzuki Jimny?

Minimum age requirements can vary depending on the vehicle and insurance conditions. Typically, drivers must be at least 25 years old and hold a full valid licence. If you’re a younger driver, contact us before booking so we can confirm eligibility and any additional requirements.

Do I need a full driver licence?

Yes. You must hold a current full valid driver licence appropriate for the vehicle. Only persons named on the rental document may drive; they must present their licence at pickup.

Can I drive with an overseas licence?

Many visitors can drive using their overseas licence, as long as it’s valid and (if required) translated or paired with an International Driving Permit. You are responsible for meeting NZ legal driving requirements during the hire.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

If your licence is not in English, you’ll generally need an official English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Contact us with a photo of your licence if you’re unsure and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Can additional drivers be added?

Yes. Additional drivers must be listed on the agreement and must present their licence at pickup. They must meet the same age and licence requirements. An additional driver fee may apply; this is a good idea for South Island road trips so you can share the driving.

Are there young driver fees?

Fees and eligibility for younger drivers (if applicable) depend on our current policy and insurance terms. Contact us before booking to confirm age requirements and any fees that apply to your dates.

Insurance & Damage

Clear answers about car rental insurance in New Zealand, excess, and what to do if something goes wrong. Keywords: car rental insurance NZ, Suzuki Jimny insurance, rental excess reduction.

What insurance is included?

Our rentals include insurance cover under the terms of the rental agreement, with an applicable excess. Optional excess reduction may be available. Always read the agreement for exclusions and your responsibilities.

What is the standard excess?

The excess is the maximum amount you may be liable for in the event of damage or loss (subject to the agreement). Choosing excess reduction can lower your risk on longer trips, winter driving, or gravel-road travel. Your rental document will state the exact excess for your booking.

What does insurance not cover?

Typical exclusions include driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving on prohibited roads/areas, ignoring road closures, driving in floodwater, or any unauthorised off-road use. Damage caused by negligence, incorrect use of equipment, or failing to follow instructions may also be excluded. Full exclusions are in your rental agreement.

Are tyres and windscreen covered?

Tyres, wheels, and glass are common damage points on New Zealand road trips (especially on gravel). Coverage varies by agreement and selected options. Premium excess reduction often includes windscreen and tyre cover subject to terms. If you’re worried, ask us about your specific booking and travel route.

What happens in an accident?

First, make sure everyone is safe. If there are injuries or the road is blocked, call emergency services. Then contact us as soon as possible so we can guide you through the next steps. If another party is involved, gather details and take photos (vehicles, plates, location, and any relevant road signs/conditions).

What if I damage the rooftop tent?

Rooftop tents and camping equipment must be used correctly and returned in good condition. If something breaks or gets damaged, tell us straight away, quick communication makes it much easier to resolve. Damage may be chargeable depending on the cause and the agreement terms.

What if I get stuck?

Jimnys are capable vehicles, but getting stuck can still happen if you drive into soft sand, mud, snow drifts, or off-road terrain. Off-roading is not allowed; recoveries from prohibited areas may be at the driver’s cost. Gravel roads are allowed, drive to conditions. If you’re unsure about a road, turn around early.

Camping & Rooftop Tent

Everything you need to know about Jimny rooftop tent hire and camping car rental in New Zealand. Keywords: camping car rental New Zealand, Jimny rooftop tent hire, New Zealand road trip camping, South Island camping vehicle.

Does the Jimny come with a rooftop tent?

Our Camping Jimnys are set up for South Island camping and can include a rooftop tent plus camping equipment (typically Christchurch-based). Queenstown vehicles are generally not fitted with rooftop tents and are ideal for day trips and winter driving.

How many people can sleep in it?

Most rooftop tents suit two people comfortably. If you’re travelling as a couple, it’s one of the best ways to do a South Island road trip without a campervan. If you’re travelling with three or more people, ask us about the best setup for your group.

Is bedding included?

Some bookings include core camping equipment, and bedding can be available as an optional extra depending on the season and your package selection. If you prefer to bring your own sleeping bags, that’s fine, just tell us what you need.

What camping equipment is included?

Camping setups commonly include essentials like a rooftop tent, cooking gear, camp chairs, and often a 12V fridge. Exact inclusions can vary by vehicle and package. Your booking confirmation will list what’s included; you can always message us if you want to double-check.

Is a fridge included?

Many Camping Jimny setups include a 12V fridge. It’s useful for keeping food fresh on longer road trips. If you’re doing a week-long South Island loop, a fridge makes the trip easier. Check your booking or our camping page for what’s included.

Can I use the tent in winter?

Yes, winter camping is doable with the right preparation. Nights can drop below freezing in alpine areas (Tekapo, Mt Cook, Central Otago). Bring warm layers, plan for shorter daylight hours, and choose campsites with shelter. If you’re unsure about conditions, ask us and we’ll help you plan a realistic route.

Is winter camping safe in New Zealand?

Winter camping can be safe when you’re prepared: warm gear, appropriate campsites, and awareness of road conditions and closures. Always check weather and road updates for alpine areas and carry emergency supplies. We can suggest routes and timing that suit the season.

Are snow chains included?

Snow chain requirements depend on season, location, and current conditions. In winter, snow chains may be included or available for hire (especially for Queenstown-based vehicles). If you’re heading into alpine areas, ask us, we’d rather you be over-prepared than caught out.

Where can I camp in the South Island?

Popular camping regions include Canterbury High Country, Mackenzie (Tekapo/Twizel), Mt Cook area, Wānaka, and the West Coast (depending on season). DOC camps can be great value; some are basic, plan for water, warmth, and supplies. If you tell us your travel dates, we’ll recommend routes that suit the time of year.

Can I freedom camp?

Freedom camping rules vary by region and can change. Many areas require you to use designated spots; some councils restrict roadside camping entirely. We recommend using official sites (DOC camps, holiday parks, council-designated areas) and following local signage. If you’re planning a freedom-camping style trip, we can suggest a practical approach for the South Island.

Is DOC camping allowed?

Yes. DOC (Department of Conservation) campsites are a popular and often affordable option for South Island road trips. Book or turn up according to DOC rules for each site. We can point you to DOC resources and suggest routes that work well with DOC camping.

Vehicle Information

What to expect from a Suzuki Jimny on New Zealand roads. Keywords: 4WD rental Christchurch, Suzuki Jimny 4x4 hire, South Island road trip car.

Are the Jimnys automatic or manual?

Transmission can vary by vehicle. Check the specific vehicle listing when you book or ask us before booking so we can match you to the right option for your preference.

3-door vs 5-door differences?

Suzuki Jimnys are compact 4WD vehicles. The current model is typically a 3-door layout. For exact specifications and capacity, check the vehicle details at booking or on our vehicles page.

Are they 4WD?

Yes. Jimnys are 4WD vehicles designed for a range of conditions. This is still a rental: off-roading is not allowed. The 4WD capability is most useful for stability on rougher sealed roads, well-formed gravel roads, and winter conditions when used appropriately.

Can I take them on gravel roads?

Yes. New Zealand has plenty of scenic gravel roads, especially in the South Island. Drive slower than on sealed roads, avoid sharp steering/braking, and keep distance from other vehicles to reduce stone chips and windscreen damage. Gravel roads are allowed; off-roading is not.

Is off-roading allowed?

No. Off-roading is not permitted. That includes beaches, riverbeds, muddy tracks, unmaintained 4WD trails, and any road that is closed or clearly unsuitable for rental use. If you’re unsure about a road, ask us first.

Do they have CarPlay?

Vehicle specifications can vary. Check the listing for your chosen Jimny at booking, or contact us if Apple CarPlay or similar connectivity is important for your trip.

How much luggage fits?

Jimnys are compact and efficient, ideal for couples or two travellers. Space depends on whether you’re in a camping setup (which uses cargo room for gear) or a day-trip setup. For best results, pack soft bags instead of large hard suitcases.

Are they good for snow?

They can be excellent in winter when driven to conditions and fitted with the right gear (e.g. snow chains where required). Many winter routes in the South Island can require chains during storms or when NZTA imposes chain restrictions. Always check road conditions and be prepared to delay travel if a pass is closed.

Pickup & Drop-off

How to collect and return your rental. Keywords: Christchurch Airport car rental, Queenstown Airport Jimny rental.

Where are you located?

We operate from Christchurch and Queenstown. Exact pickup and return addresses are provided when you book. Christchurch is ideal for camping Jimnys and South Island loops; Queenstown for day trips and winter/ski trips.

Is airport pickup available?

We offer airport pickup and drop-off options to make your arrival easy. If you’re flying into Christchurch or Queenstown, tell us your flight details and we’ll confirm the best collection method for your booking.

Is pickup available 24/7?

Yes. Customers can pick up 24/7. If you’re arriving late, we can arrange after-hours collection. The vehicle keys are accessed via a secure lockbox, and we provide clear instructions before your arrival.

How does after-hours pickup work?

After-hours collection uses a secure lockbox at our premises. We send you instructions before your arrival so you can collect the keys and vehicle at a time that suits your flight or schedule. Return can also be done 24/7 using the agreed return process.

Is there a lockbox?

Yes. At selected locations we use a lockbox so you can collect and return the vehicle outside business hours. Instructions are provided when you book.

How do I return the car after hours?

You’ll park in the agreed return area and follow the return instructions (including where to leave the keys). This is ideal for early flights or late-night arrivals back into town. We’ll confirm the exact steps for your booking.

Can I do a one-way rental?

One-way rentals (e.g. Christchurch to Queenstown or vice versa) may be possible depending on fleet availability and season. One-way trips often involve a relocation component, so fees and availability can vary. Contact us with your dates and route and we’ll confirm what’s possible.

What if I return early?

Early returns typically do not attract a refund for the unused days; you remain liable for the hire charge for the period you agreed to. If your plans change, contact us, we may be able to adjust future dates subject to our cancellation policy.

Travel & Road Trip Questions

Planning a South Island road trip car hire? Here are the most common itinerary questions. We focus on the South Island; vehicles are based in Christchurch and Queenstown.

Is the Jimny suitable for the South Island?

Yes. Suzuki Jimnys are a great match for the South Island: compact, easy to park, comfortable for two travellers, and capable on the variety of roads you’ll encounter. Many customers choose a Jimny specifically to explore scenic and gravel access roads without hiring a large campervan.

Can I drive to Queenstown from Christchurch?

Yes. It’s possible in a day, but it’s a long drive. Most travellers prefer breaking it up with a night in the Mackenzie region (Tekapo or Twizel) to enjoy the scenery and reduce fatigue. In winter, build in extra buffer time for road conditions and possible pass closures.

Can I visit Tekapo, Mt Cook, Wānaka?

Yes, those are classic South Island routes. Always check weather and road updates for alpine areas and plan fuel stops in smaller towns. For gravel access roads, drive slower and keep distance to protect the windscreen and paint.

Are there restrictions on certain roads?

Yes. Prohibited roads and areas are set out in your rental agreement (e.g. Skippers Canyon, Nevis Road, Ninety Mile Beach, beaches, 4WD tracks, riverbeds, farm tracks, unformed roads). Only public roads (council or NZTA maintained) are permitted. Gravel public roads are allowed.

Can I take the car on the ferry?

Our rentals are primarily designed for South Island travel. If you want to take a vehicle across the Interislander (or other ferry) to the North Island, contact us before booking so we can confirm whether it’s permitted for your specific vehicle and booking type.

Cancellations & Changes

Policies vary based on timing and season. Your rental agreement and booking terms are the source of truth for your booking.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms depend on your booking and how close you are to the travel dates. In peak periods, late cancellations can be difficult to rebook, so cancellations may be partially refundable or non-refundable depending on your agreement. Please refer to your booking confirmation and rental agreement for the exact policy that applies.

Can I change dates?

Often yes, depending on availability. If you need to change dates, contact us as soon as you know, the earlier you reach out, the more likely we can shift your booking without disrupting your trip.

Do you offer refunds?

Refunds are handled according to our cancellation policy for your booking. If you cancel within the required notice period, you may receive a refund minus any stated cancellation fee. Late cancellations may not be refundable. Your booking confirmation and agreement set out the exact terms.

What if my flight is delayed?

Contact us as soon as you know. We support 24/7 pickup and can usually adjust the pickup method so you’re not stuck at the airport. If you’re arriving after-hours, we’ll confirm lockbox instructions and where your vehicle will be parked.
