Why the South Island is perfect for a road trip
The South Island packs an incredible variety of scenery into a manageable size. In one trip you can see coast, mountains, lakes, glaciers, and rainforest. Roads are generally safe and well-maintained, and distances between highlights are short enough that you can cover a lot without long driving days.
Camping is easy too. DOC campsites, holiday parks, and designated freedom camping spots make it simple to wake up beside a lake or under the stars. A South Island road trip in a Jimny gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.
Why a Jimny is perfect for this trip
A Suzuki Jimny is built for exactly this kind of adventure: small enough to feel nimble, capable enough for the roads you want to drive.
- Compact size ; Easy to park, easy to drive on narrow or winding roads. No stress in small towns or car parks.
- Gravel road capability ; Well-formed gravel and unsealed public roads are allowed. Get to DOC camps and scenic spots without worry.
- Rooftop tent option ; Add the Adventure Package from Christchurch and you have a full camping setup. Sleep beside lakes and mountains.
- Easier than campervans ; No bulky vehicle to manoeuvre. Lower fuel use, simpler driving, and a more adventurous feel.
Example 7-day South Island road trip
A classic loop that hits lakes, mountains, fiords, and the wild West Coast.
Christchurch → Tekapo → Wanaka → Queenstown → Milford Sound → West Coast → Arthur's Pass → Christchurch
You can extend to 10–14 days to add more stops or rest days. Pick up your Jimny in Christchurch for the full camping option, or start from Queenstown for a shorter loop.
Best places to camp
The South Island is full of great camping spots. Lake Tekapo has DOC and commercial campsites with stunning lake and mountain views. Wanaka and the surrounding area offer lakeside and mountain camping. Fiordland DOC camps put you in the heart of rainforest and fiord scenery. The West Coast has everything from beach camping to rainforest camps. Hanmer Springs is ideal for a hot-pools stop with nearby campsites.
Add the Adventure Package when you hire from Christchurch and you'll have a rooftop tent and gear ready for any of these spots.
Winter road trips
Winter on the South Island is quieter and incredibly scenic. Tekapo and the Mackenzie region offer snow-dusted mountains and clear, starry skies. Hanmer Springs hot pools are perfect after a day of driving. Roads are generally in good condition; snow chains may be required on some alpine routes, we can advise when you book.
A Jimny handles winter conditions well. Book from Queenstown with snow chains in winter, or add the camping setup from Christchurch for a winter road trip with a difference.
Christchurch vs Queenstown pickup
Christchurch pickup is ideal if you want the full road-trip experience: rooftop tent and Adventure Package (camping gear) are available here. You can do the classic loop starting and ending in Christchurch, or drive one-way to Queenstown (subject to availability). Many international visitors fly into Christchurch and start their South Island itinerary from there.
Queenstown pickup suits travellers who are already in the south or want a shorter trip. Queenstown hires are vehicle-only (no rooftop tent or camping gear). Snow chains are included in winter. Perfect for day trips, ski fields, and scenic drives. Choose Christchurch for camping; Queenstown for a nimble adventure vehicle.
