Rivers at full flow for the season opener
The fishing season opens on 1 October and the spring melt has the rivers running high and clear. The gravel access roads to the river mouths and quiet upper reaches are exactly where a small vehicle earns its keep.
Load the rods, point it at a braided river you have been meaning to try, and have the run of the bank on a weekday. Plenty of room in the back for waders and a chilly bin.
High country
Snow still on the tops, tussock coming green
Spring in the high country is a split screen: fresh green in the valleys and the last of the winter snow holding on the tops. The passes are open, the light is long, and the tour buses have not started yet.
Take the backroad over a high country pass, stop where you like on a gravel shoulder, and have the lookout to yourself. The Jimny is happy on the loose surface and easy to park at the trailhead.
