Where winter camping works best

Lake Tekapo

Winter brings clear skies, fewer crowds, and stunning snow-dusted views. The Dark Sky Reserve makes for incredible stargazing. Hot pools and cafés in town add comfort after a cold night.

Tip: Wind can be strong by the lake, pick a sheltered spot and pack warm layers. Book holiday parks in advance in peak season (December–April).

Hanmer Springs

Hot pools, forest walks, and a relaxed village vibe. Winter is ideal for soaking after a day exploring. Plenty of DOC and council sites nearby.

Tip: Frost is common, warm sleeping bags and a good mat make a big difference. Use the campsite finder and tap “Near Hanmer Springs” to focus the map.

Chains & winter driving

Chains may be required on alpine roads and ski-field access. Drive to conditions, plan shorter days in winter, and check NZTA road closures before you go. The Jimny is capable in winter, but ice and snow still demand respect.

Rules

  • No off-roading, stick to public roads
  • Gravel and unsealed public roads are fine

Winter camping FAQ

Can I winter camp in New Zealand?
Yes. Winter camping is popular in the South Island. Lake Tekapo, Hanmer Springs, and Central Otago offer clear skies, hot pools, and quieter campsites. Come prepared with warm gear and check road and weather conditions.
Is it safe to winter camp?
Winter camping is safe when you’re prepared. Use designated campsites, pack warm sleeping gear, check NZTA for road closures, and drive to conditions. Don’t push on if weather or roads are marginal.
What temperatures should I expect in Tekapo or Hanmer in winter?
Both can be cold at night with frost and occasional snow. Daytime can be crisp and clear. Pack layers and a good sleeping bag; our optional Marmot sleeping bags are suited to winter.
Do I need chains?
Chains may be required on alpine and ski-field roads. Check NZTA and local signs. We can advise on chain availability when you book if you’re planning winter alpine routes.
Can I freedom camp in winter?
Where freedom camping is permitted, yes, but rules vary by council and DOC. Some areas close or restrict access in winter. Use our campsite finder and always verify with the official listing or local office.
How do I prevent condensation in a rooftop tent?
Ventilate: crack a window or vent when possible. Avoid cooking inside. Use a good mat and sleeping bag so you’re not breathing straight onto the ceiling. In cold weather, condensation is common; wiping it down in the morning helps.
What sleeping bags do you offer?
We offer optional warm Marmot sleeping bags and pillows. Add them when you book or ask us. Many customers bring their own if they have a favourite.
Can I pick up after hours?
Yes. 24/7 pickup is available from Christchurch using a secure lockbox. We’ll send you clear instructions after you book.
Is the Adventure Package available from Queenstown?
No. The Adventure Package (rooftop tent and camping gear) is available for Christchurch pickups only. Queenstown hires are vehicle-only, ideal for day trips and accommodation stays.
Are gravel roads allowed?
Yes. Well-formed gravel and unsealed public roads are fine. Off-road tracks, beaches, and private 4WD trails are not permitted.
Can I take the Jimny off-road?
No. Off-roading is not allowed. You may use public gravel and unsealed roads. Follow DOC and council rules.
What if roads are closed?
Check NZTA journey planner and road closure pages before you travel. Have a backup route or extra night’s accommodation in mind. If you’re delayed, contact us and we’ll help where we can.
What's the minimum hire?
Minimum hire is typically 3 days. For a winter camping trip we often recommend 5–7 days or more so you can take your time and allow for weather.
Can I drop the car in Christchurch if I started elsewhere?
One-way to Christchurch may be available depending on dates and fleet, ask us when you book.
