Jimny Camping New Zealand: Rooftop Tent & Tips

Camping with a Jimny in New Zealand means a compact 4WD plus a rooftop tent and gear (from our Christchurch fleet). This guide covers what’s included, where camping is easiest, how to pack and set up, and how to camp responsibly, including checking council and DOC rules before you stay.

  • Rooftop tent and camping gear with Christchurch Jimny hire
  • DOC camps and holiday parks, rules vary; always check signage and council
  • Packing and setup tips for a comfortable night
  • Weather and comfort tips for NZ conditions

Is the Jimny right for you?

Great if

  • You want to camp without the size of a campervan.
  • You’re picking up from Christchurch (where our camping setup is available).
  • You’re happy to use DOC camps and holiday parks and check freedom camping rules where they apply.
  • You’re travelling as a couple or with one other person.

Not ideal if

  • You need an onboard toilet or shower, use holiday park and DOC facilities.
  • You’re only hiring from Queenstown (our Queenstown Jimnys have snow chains in winter, no rooftop tent).
  • You want to camp in winter without preparing for cold, see our winter camping tips.

Best use cases

  • Multi-day South Island trip with nights at DOC camps and holiday parks.
  • Combining scenic drives with simple rooftop tent camping.
  • Shoulder season (March–April) when nights are still comfortable.
  • Travellers who’ve checked local freedom camping rules and signage.

What “camping with a Jimny” looks like

Our Christchurch Jimnys can be hired with a rooftop tent and camping gear. You get a compact 4WD that’s easy to drive and park, plus a bed off the ground and the gear you need for a comfortable night. Queenstown vehicles are set up for day trips and ski trips (snow chains in winter), no rooftop tent there.

Where camping is easiest: DOC and holiday parks

DOC camps and holiday parks are the most straightforward: designated sites, often with toilets and water. Freedom camping rules vary by council and site, some areas allow non-self-contained vehicles, others don’t. Always check signage, council websites, and DOC before you stay. We don’t make legal claims about where you can freedom camp; rules change and vary by location.

Packing and setup tips

Pack soft bags so you can stow gear in the cabin and roof. Set up the rooftop tent on level ground; allow a few minutes the first time. Bring a head torch and keep essentials (water, warm layer) handy. Our camping setup page lists what’s included with the hire.

Packing: Layers and a good sleeping bag (or use hire gear) make a big difference. NZ weather can change quickly.

Weather and comfort

Summer nights are mild in most of the South Island; spring and autumn can be cooler. In winter, you’ll need warm gear and possibly a different plan, see our winter camping page. Rain is possible any time; a covered cooking area or holiday park facilities help.

Camp responsibly

Leave no trace: take all rubbish, use toilets where provided, and don’t camp where it’s not permitted. Check council and DOC rules, they vary by area. Respect signage and other campers.
