Suzuki Jimny with rooftop tent and ladder, camping setup. – Jimny Rentals.

Jimny Rooftop Tent Camping: Setup, Tips & What’s Included

A rooftop tent on a Jimny turns your hire into a compact camping setup: bed off the ground, quick setup, and easy to pack down. This guide covers what’s included, how to set up, where it works best (DOC camps, holiday parks), and a clear note: our Queenstown Jimnys don’t have rooftop tents, they’re set up for day trips and ski trips with snow chains in winter.

  • Rooftop tent and gear available with Christchurch Jimny hire
  • Simple setup: level ground, a few minutes, and you’re ready
  • Best at DOC camps and holiday parks, check freedom camping rules
  • Queenstown Jimnys: snow chains in winter (no rooftop tent)

Is the Jimny right for you?

Great if

  • You’re picking up from Christchurch (where the rooftop tent option is available).
  • You want to camp without towing or driving a large campervan.
  • You’re happy to use DOC camps and holiday parks and check local rules.
  • You’re travelling as a couple or with one other person.

Not ideal if

  • You’re only hiring from Queenstown, those vehicles have snow chains in winter, not a rooftop tent.
  • You need an onboard toilet or shower (use facilities at camps and holiday parks).
  • You want to camp in the depths of winter without extra warmth gear, see winter camping.

Best use cases

  • Multi-day South Island trip with nights at DOC camps or holiday parks.
  • Combining driving and camping without the size of a campervan.
  • Shoulder season (March–April) for comfortable nights.
  • Reading our campervan vs rooftop tent guide to compare options.

What’s included with the Jimny rooftop tent

Our camping setup page lists everything included with the Christchurch Jimny camping hire: rooftop tent, mattress, and the gear you need for a comfortable night. If you’re unsure what to bring personally (sleeping bag, pillow, etc.), we can advise at booking.

Setup steps

Choose level ground, even a slight slope can make sleep uncomfortable. Park the vehicle, secure the handbrake, and follow the tent instructions (typically: unzip, fold out the ladder, and secure). Allow a few minutes the first time. Pack down in the morning and stow gear so nothing blocks the driver’s view.

Tip: A head torch is useful for evening setup and early starts.

Where it’s best used: holiday parks and DOC camps

Designated camps have level sites, toilets, and often water. Freedom camping rules vary, many areas require self-contained vehicles; rooftop tent setups usually aren’t self-contained. Always check signage, council, and DOC. Our freedom camping guide and interactive map point you to official sources.

Warmth tips: winter vs shoulder season

In summer and shoulder season (e.g. March–April), a good sleeping bag and layers are usually enough. In winter, temperatures drop, add a warm bag, thermal layers, and consider holiday park cabins or covered facilities on very cold nights. See our winter camping page for more.

Queenstown Jimnys do not have rooftop tents

Our Queenstown vehicles are set up for day trips, ski trips, and exploring from a fixed base. They have snow chains in winter, not a rooftop tent. For rooftop tent camping, pick up from Christchurch.

Compare with a campervan

A rooftop tent gives you a bed and compact footprint; a campervan gives more interior space and often onboard toilet/shower. Compare cost, flexibility, and comfort in our campervan vs rooftop tent and Jimny vs campervan guides.
